Let's face it, friends: Americans are stupid. Not all of us, mind you, but most of us, and all of the time. Our stupidity is manifested by our passivity in the face of power. I am convinced that most Americans will put up with just about anything. I mean ... they have already, haven't they?
This is especially true of the rank-and-file Republican grunt: the soccer mom's and nascar dads that the polticial campaigns have pandered to, while staying far enough away and aloof to avoid their apparent contagion -- warnings were issued by the Democratic Party to avoid contact for fear of catching something. (See story: http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/story/20439.html) Catching something, indeed! Party leadership seems to be the same on both sides of the aisle. Just what are they afraid of catching from the lower 95%? Despair? Poverty?
The average Republican (and that necessarily means NOT the wealthy) is an undereducated proletarian who is drawn to the negative side of power. They feel empowered by identifying themselves with those who inflict misery, pain, suffering and death as means of, as it were, 'gettin' 'er done'.
But I am as afraid of us on the other side of the street. The Obama movement strikes me as symptomatic of our own great blindsight: the addiction to hope. I guess that sounds rather dour to say. But it is apt, nonetheless. Mr. Obama has roused the masses to a pitch not seen (heard?) in my lifetime. But what is his actual message? "There is no Right; there is no Left; there are no Republicans; there are no Democrats. There are only Americans." (My close paraphrase.) Let's continue with that lovefest: there are no CEOs; there are no employees; there are no persons afraid for their future; there are no interests stomping on that future. Why can't we all get along?
Well, friends, we have 'gotten along' to the point of our extermination. I want to see a fighter, not a lover. I want a Programme with specific planks, not a -- a -- a FAITH-BASED DEMOCRAT!!!?!
